Making tiles for my shower has been very satisfying, even though it has been a slow process. I didn't know what I was in for when I started this project and over a year later, I'm halfway through with the goal to make 558 of them.
Here is a reel of bits and pieces of my tile-making process. If you're working on making your own tiles, here are a few tips + tricks I learned along the way:
When rolling out your clay slabs, be cautious not to manipulate the clay, as its 'plastic memory' can cause your tiles to warp, bend, or curl during the drying and firing process.
Wait to trim and smooth tiles until they are leather hard.
Drying your tiles on a plaster slab or a drywall sheet will help them dry flatter and faster.
If you're installing your tiles to a wall, make sure and score the back of them so they grip to the adhesive and hold in place better.
